Times Higher Education annually releases a ranking of the world's universities. The THE World University Rankings, published in early September, are one of the world's most prestigious university rankings. This year, the list included a record number of institutions. LUT soared to the top 251–300 among the 1 662 universities listed. Last year, LUT placed in the top 351–400 of the 1 526 universities.

THE bases its ranking on 13 indicators that measure the universities' performance in five areas: research, citations, teaching, international outlook, and industry income. LUT improved its relative position in four out of these five areas.

LUT's special strengths are its international collaborative publications, citations to its scientific publications, and industry collaboration and the funding it yields.

"The results show that we are now an even more influential part of the international science community and a strong actor in industry collaboration," says Jari Hämäläinen, Vice Rector for Research and Innovation at LUT.

There are tens of thousands of universities in the world, and competition between them is fierce. Hämäläinen points out that holding on to an impressive ranking position requires hard work. The vice rector mentions that LUT's brand is one of the areas that still requires strengthening.

"Compared to the highest-ranking universities, LUT is lagging behind in terms of reputation, which is weighted significantly also in this ranking. Building the LUT brand will help us in future international comparisons."

The ranking list included ten Finnish universities – LUT in a shared third place.
