Conor Shaw
Biography
I’m a Postdoctoral Researcher in the KEMUT team where I tackle built environment challenges to help bring the sector in line with planetary boundaries. I lead International, European and National funding acquisition, engage in B.Sc and M.Sc curriculum development and delivery, supervise undergrad and postgrad researchers, and carry out my own independent and collaborative research. I am a scientific reviewer for a number of leading journals where I also publish widely, and I am a regularly invited speaker in both industry and academic settings. I'm also an adjunct researcher to University College Dublin and the University of Limerick.
My ongoing research activities include:
-IEA Annex 89 - Energy in Buildings and Communities (EBC) - Ways to Implement Net-zero Whole Life Carbon Buildings https://annex89.iea-ebc.org/
-Justice in Housing Europe network https://www.uni-hamburg.de/en/newsroom/forschung/2024/0815-fv-33-gw-woh…
-BILT Europe committee https://www.bilteurope.org/
-ECO-ASSET, SEAI funded RD&D project
-Build Digital project, advising on EU and Irish environmental policy. https://www.builddigitalproject.ie/
During my doctoral research I was a member of the Horizon’s 2020 funded Cloud-BIM European Training Network who are at the forefront of scientific output related to digitalisation within the built environment. As part of the Building Energy Informatics Lab at University College Dublin, my research in the domain of Life Cycle Costing aimed to scale-up value-based decision-making methods, supporting a wide range of stakeholders, and is critical to the procurement ambitions of the European Union towards sustainability ambitions.
With a background in Architectural Technology (B.Sc from TU Dublin) and Construction Management (M.Sc from HTW Berlin/Helsinki Metropolia) I’ve held a wide variety of roles in the construction industry from building and surveying to design and training. Specialising in building information modelling (BIM) I’m active in the global dialogue as a committee member of the Digital Built Environment Institute (running the BILT Europe conference). Before starting my PhD I worked as a site supervisor, overseeing ecological building projects in Finland, and personally delivering straw, clay and timber trades as a sub-contractor.
