Biography
Gustavo de Almeida obtained his master's degree from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 2003, and his doctorate from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, in 2006, both in Chemical Engineering. He worked as a professor for approximately fifteen years in Brazil. From 2022, he started working as a researcher in the Department of Energy Technology at LUT. His general research interest is in data-driven analysis in simulated and real-world industrial processes - such as pulp mills - and energy systems, using AI/ML and statistical methods. The applications include, for example, scenario and sensitivity analysis; virtual sensing; process improvement, optimization and monitoring; abnormal situation management; fault detection and diagnosis; and operational diagnostics. The ultimate goals are related to more efficient, cleaner, and sustainable industrial operations. He is currently working on developing online courses for higher education in Engineering. On the research side, he has a particular interest in learning analytics using AI/ML and statistical methods. For example, how to automatically evaluate and provide feedback on students' answers to open-ended questions, such as essays.
