STEESMAT (Smart Transformer for Enhanced Efficiency and Sustainability in Maritime Transportation) is a Horizon Europe project that aims to design, develop and demonstrate a modular DC-based power distribution system for large ships. By replacing conventional AC systems with MVDC, solid-state transformers and smart energy management, it will reduce fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions while enabling the integration of renewable energy sources. Demonstrations on land and at sea will show how this technology supports the transition to zero-emission maritime transport.

Goals

  • develop and validate an advanced MVDC power system with solid-state transformer technology
  • enable efficient integration of batteries, fuel cells and other sustainable energy sources
  • improve onboard energy efficiency and reduce emissions from large vessels
  • demonstrate the technology both in controlled environments and at sea
  • pave the way for future commercial deployment of zero-emission maritime power systems.
