Almost every modern product, from electric motors to aircraft wings and microchips, is now designed with computer simulations. However, some of the most important problems are so demanding that even today's supercomputers can't solve them in a reasonable time, and the energy cost of computing keeps growing. Quantum computers work on entirely different principles, and in the future they may solve certain types of problems much faster and more energy-efficiently.
In this webinar, Industry Professor Valtteri Lahtinen explains in accessible terms what the promise of quantum computing is based on, and what is already real and what is still hype. He also shows how quantum algorithms are being developed for practical engineering tasks such as fluid flow simulation, and why the first real benefits may come from combining quantum computing with AI.
Examples come both from teaching and research at LUT and from industrial research at the startup company Quanscient, where quantum computing meets multiphysics simulation. Finally, he discusses what this means for Finnish industry and what skills tomorrow's engineers and mathematicians will need.
No specific background in mathematics or computer science is required.
