With a donation from the City of Lahti, LUT will establish five new bachelor's programmes on its Lahti campus starting in autumn 2028. The new programmes will be taught in English and be offered in business and technology. Students will be able to specialise in

  • business,
  • applied mathematics,
  • software engineering,
  • environmental technology,
  • chemical engineering.

“Opportunities for bachelor’s-level studies on the Lahti campus will increase significantly. With five new bachelor's programmes, the total number of options will rise to thirteen,” says Mari Kallioinen-Mänttäri, LUT’s provost.

In Lahti, LUT currently offers English-taught bachelor's programmes in four fields: industrial engineering and management, software engineering, energy technology, and business. In autumn 2027, bachelor's programmes in civil engineering will start in both Finnish and English along with a Finnish-language bachelor’s programme in chemical engineering. Moreover, LUT has previously decided to launch a physics bachelor’s programme in English in 2028. In addition to bachelor's programmes, students in Lahti can complete master’s-level studies leading to the degrees of Master of Science in Economics and Business Administration or Master of Science in Technology.

Programmes taught in English responding to the needs of the professional world

All five new bachelor’s programmes will be taught in English, because many technology and business graduates go on to jobs where it is the working language. The structure of the new programmes differs from the existing ones in that students choose their specialisation after their first year of studies.

The plan is for students in chemical engineering and environmental engineering to complete the same studies in their first year. Similarly, business, applied mathematics, and software engineering students will complete the same first-year studies and then select one of the three specialisation options.

“The new programmes will give young people more opportunities to complete their bachelor’s degree in Lahti. The programmes in business, applied mathematics, and software engineering are designed especially for applicants who want to apply their mathematical skills in fields such as software development or business analytics,” Kallioinen-Mänttäri says.
