Biography

My research focuses on the decarbonization of energy-intensive industries and the development of sustainable energy systems. In particular, I investigate hydrogen value chains and bioenergy with carbon capture, utilization, and storage (BECCUS). Most of my research is related to the pulp and paper industry, which provides a unique platform for integrating low-carbon technologies and industrial carbon management solutions.

I have studied hydrogen transportation, including the techno-economic and environmental performance of different transport options and infrastructure pathways. More recently, my research has expanded to novel hydrogen storage and transportation concepts based on metal redox cycles, which offer opportunities for efficient hydrogen handling, long-distance transport, and integration with industrial processes.

I completed my doctoral thesis in 2022. The title of the thesis was The Role of the Forest Industry in Mitigating Global Change: Towards Energy-Efficient and Low-Carbon Operation. My doctoral research focused on the energy transition of the pulp and paper industry (PPI). The sector has significant potential to reduce fossil CO₂ emissions through improved energy efficiency, electrification, and the replacement of fossil fuels with bio-based alternatives. Furthermore, pulp mills provide promising opportunities for BECCUS, while forest-based products can act as carbon stores or substitutes for fossil-based materials.

My current research also addresses the integration of hydrogen and Power-to-X technologies into industrial systems, particularly within pulp mill environments. I am interested in developing technically feasible and economically viable pathways for achieving carbon neutrality and negative emissions in the forest industry and other energy-intensive sectors.
