Embedded intelligence is currently included in a wide variety of devices. These include cars, washing machines, printers, televisions and mobile phones.
Embedded intelligence is also needed in the manufacturing stage of these devices and products—and that of many others. Today's industrial automation is highly based on digital information and communication technologies.
In all these applications, embedded intelligence refers to a control or an adjustment algorithm executed with a microprocessor, a programmable logic chip, or an application-dedicated ASIC chip included in the device.
Expertise Ranging from Automation and Communication Systems to Digital Signal Processing
The areas of expertise of the Laboratory of Control Engineering and Digital Systems include the digital development and implementation of adjustment and control algorithms (using DSP processors and FPGA chips), automation information systems, and data communication in industrial environments.
The laboratory's research topics have included sensorless control of permanent magnet synchronous machines, the implementation of frequency converter control algorithms in FPGA chips, the digital implementation of active magnetic bearing control algorithms, electric network data communication in an industrial environment, predictive status monitoring algorithms and data communication for electric drives, and grid connections of distributed power production.
The laboratory is responsible for the main courses in embedded systems and for instruction in communication electronics and wind and solar energy systems.
An engineer who graduated from LUT manages the development of embedded systems and knows the central principles of automation and communication systems and digital signal processing.
The education plans get students prepared for versatile jobs within industrial and consumer electronics and automation and communication system design.
