Summer School in Heat and Mass Transfer 2013

LUT Energy together with Doctoral Programme of Computational Fluid Dynamics and Centre of Computational Engineering and Integrated Design (CEID) will organize Summer School in Heat and Mass Transfer 3-5 June 2013 at Lappeenranta University of Technology.

Summer school is a postgraduate level course and continuation of traditional Summer Schools in Heat and Mass Transfer held at LUT since 1984. The main topic in the summer school is turbulence and modeling of turbulent flows.

Students pursuing postgraduate studies may gain 3 to 5 ECTS credits from the summer school. For 3 credits, students should actively participate in the lectures and pass a web exam based on seminar material.

Two additional credits are given to those who will give a presentation in the summer school. The date of the web exam will be scheduled later.

Participants who wish to present their research should send max.1 page abstract of their presentation with their registration by May 3 2013 to course coordinator by e-mail

Also presentations from other fields than turbulence, related e.g. to energy technology, thermodynamics or heat and mass transfer are welcome.

Course topics

  • Overview of methods for turbulent flow simulations (DNS, LES, RANS) and their limitations
  • Introduction into Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) computational approach
  • Near-wall treatment in turbulence modeling
  • Reynolds stress models of turbulence: rationale and predictive capabilities
  • Eddy-viscosity-based models of turbulence: rationale and predictive capabilities
  • Overview of hybrid LES/RANS and relevant models for unsteady turbulent flow simulations: rationale and predictive capabilities

Principal lecturer

Professor Suad Jakirlic from Darmstadt University of Technology will act as principal lecturer in the summer school. Prof. Jakirlic has been heading the group for Modelling and Simulation of Turbulent Flows at the Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Aerodynamics, Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany since 1997.

He received his PhD degree at the University of Erlangen/Nuremberg, Germany, in March, 1997. In June, 2004 he has been awarded the Venia Legendi in Fluid Mechanics at the Darmstadt University of Technology. He is the coordinator of the ERCOFTAC (European Research Community on Flow, Turbulence and Combustion) Special Interest Group on Refined Turbulence Modelling.

Prof. Jakirlic is furthermore the Organizing Committee Secretary of the Conference Series on Turbulence, Heat and Mass Transfer (THMT). His field of interest is the Computational Fluid Dynamics focussing on the RANS (with special focus on the near-wall second-moment closure models) and hybrid LES/RANS modelling of transitional and turbulent single and two-phase flows and heat transfer.

Until now 14 PhD theses have been completed under his supervision. Prof. Jakirlic has published about 200 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals, edited books, bulletins, periodicals and symposium proceedings.

The course is free of charge. There is restricted number of places. In case there is need to limit the number of participants, the postgraduate students will be considered first in the order of their registration.
