Edemilson Paraná, associate professor of social sciences at LUT University, is one of the early-career researchers to receive a Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) this year. In addition, he has received an academy research fellowship from the Research Council of Finland.
Together, the grants provide a solid foundation for Edemilson Paraná to realise his ambitious research plans. He conducts research on the relationships being established in the digital economy between human brains, computers, and intelligence vis-à-vis AI and neurotechnology, along with their evolving power dynamics. His ERC application was titled From human capital to intelligence management: data-driven economy and brain-computer interfaces.
“The support I’ve received from the research group I lead at LUT has been outstanding. I’ve also had the unique privilege of testing and iterating the core project ideas with other brilliant scholars. A great deal of work lies ahead, including research across three continents, and I can hardly wait to begin,” says Paraná.
Edemilson Paraná has a Brazilian background. He moved to Finland two years ago to work for LUT’s Department of Social Sciences, which addresses imminent societal changes through a multidisciplinary, multidimensional, and systemic approach.
