Edemilson Parana
Biography
Edemilson Paraná is an Associate Professor in Sociology at University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland, and a part-time Associate Professor in the Department of Social Sciences at LUT University, Finland, where he also holds the title of Docent in Political Economy of AI and Digital Technologies. He holds a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant and is an Academy Research Fellow of the Research Council of Finland (RCF). He is also a Geary Fellow at the UCD Geary Institute for Public Policy, a member of the UCD Centre for Digital Policy, and an International Fellow at the University of Groningen’s Rudolf Agricola School for Sustainable Development, the Netherlands. He has previously taught at the University of Brasília and the Federal University of Ceará in Brazil, and has held research fellowships at Brazil’s National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA, Brazil).
Edemilson has lectured and published extensively in the areas of political economy, economic sociology, and social theory. His research focuses on the political economy of digital finance, artificial intelligence, and emerging neurotechnologies. His academic work has been published in Big Data & Society, New Political Economy, Cambridge Journal of Economics, Third World Quarterly, Globalizations, Platforms & Society, among others, and has been featured in media outlets across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. He currently sits on the boards of The Yearbook on Data Autonomy (editorial), Historical Materialism (corresponding editorial), and Global Political Economy (advisory).
