The Mechanics of Materials Lab pushes the boundaries of solid mechanics to address the scientific and industrial challenges associated with fatigue and fracture of advanced structural materials and structures, including steels, aluminium alloys, nickel-based alloys, and components such as additively manufactured alloys and welded pipelines, as well as the design and testing of energy infrastructure. With a strong focus on advanced steels, metals, welds, welded structures and additively manufatured alloys, we lead the design, fabrication, and testing of metallic infrastructure for regular engineering applications in air and for energy systems involving hydrogen, ammonia, CO₂, and methanol, enabling their integration into aerospace, maritime, railway, and other transportation sectors, driving innovation toward durable, lightweight, and sustainable energy and mobility technologies.
