LUT Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Laboratory (CVPRL) produces useful and significant value-added applications, especially using digital image processing and analysis. CVPRL educates computer vision and machine learning experts as masters and doctors of technology for the industry and the academia.

Research areas

Our main objective is to carry out high quality research on computer vision, machine learning, and pattern recognition. The laboratory also serves the industry as an expert organization, performs applied research and educates experts in its research fields. LUT CVPRL offers education in the Degree Program in Computational Engineering (bachelor, master and doctoral studies) as follows:

  • the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition major subject,
  • especially in the master's program Data-Centric Engineering (DCE), and
  • Laskennallinen tekniikka (Late) in the Finnish bachelor program.

Our research interests include computer vision applications, biomedical imaging, social signal processing, and data analytics. For example, the research is focused on machine vision systems for the sawmill industry, medical image analysis for the efficient healthcare of eye diseases, plankton recognition for conservation of nature and coping with the climate change, and social signal processing for emotion AI applications.

LUT CVPRL is funded by Academy of Finland, European Commission, Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (Tekes/Business Finland), and private companies. We co-operate with many national and international research groups, including many universities from Europe and USA. LUT CVPRL is associated with the Academy of Finland's Center of Excellence (CoE) in Research in Inverse Modeling and Imaging.
