- to make doctoral education more methodical and raise quality
- to disseminate good practice and
- to increase the efficiency of international mobility as well as networking
Finland needs more highly trained professionals
The Ministry of Education and Culture has now granted funding for a doctoral education pilot programme, where universities hire a thousand new doctoral researchers for three-year contracts to complete a doctoral degree.

Doctoral education
During doctoral education, the student acquires in-depth knowledge of his or her research field in order to be able to apply scientific research methods and generate new scientific knowledge independently and with due criticism within his or her research field.
The doctoral education consists of acquiring transferable skills, studying field-specific and supporting studies and conducting scientific research. The extent of studies is 30 ECTS credits.

Highlights from LUT Doctoral School Science Conference
The third multidisciplinary LUT Doctoral School Science Conference was held on 20 May 2025 on the Lappeenranta campus.
During the event, doctoral students presented their research topics and networked with their peers. The conference brought together 450 participants, including doctoral students, dissertation supervisors, and university stakeholders.
