The research interests of research group of Intelligent Machines range from mechatronic system modelling and simulation to advanced robotics with special reference to nuclear and hazardous environments.

Our mission is to carry out leading edge, high-quality, and internationally recognized scientific research in the field of design, modelling, simulation and control of mechatronic systems. Energy efficiency and usability of mechatronic systems are also in the groups agenda.

Research areas

The first core research area of the laboratory has been the modelling and simulation of mobile working machines. Within this context the spearhead topics have been the development of modelling and simulation methods for numerically stiff systems such as fluid power and electric transmission systems.  The real-time simulation models have been used in development of control, durability and usability of such machines. In addition to simulation and virtual technology the laboratory is internationally merited in development, analysis and control of special robots, that are able to perform machining, joining and handling is challenging environments such as in nuclear fusion reactors.

The laboratory also has developed groundbreaking ergonomic systems for remote operation of mobile working machines. These systems are based on novel methods utilizing simulation, AI and bio-signal based monitoring of human operators.

Infrastructure

The laboratory has two research environments, namely the simulation laboratory and heavy laboratory for experiments.

The simulation laboratory is equipped with advanced real-time simulation software, a visualization cave, and data collection system, within which the simulated data and bio-signal data from human operator can simultaneously be collected and analyzed.

In the heavy laboratory, physical machine prototypes such as cranes, robots and small mobile machines can be developed and tested.
