Research interest involves packaging technology, packaging machinery and press-forming, heat sealing and converting of fibre-based materials. The main research scope is to enable fibre-based packaging solutions to be used with processes that are traditionally used with polymer-based materials. Such processes are food packaging, thermoforming, heat sealing, form-fill-seal processes (FFS), modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) etc. Press-forming and thermoforming of paperboard trays and modified atmosphere packaging using such trays involves the development of packaging machinery and processes, forming and sealing tool technology, process parameters and material properties.
The social context of the work comes naturally – packages are used daily by all of us; the scope is to make possible the use of fibre-based solutions in reliable, mass-scale production. The work is done in cooperation with and has an effect on packaging material producers, packaging machinery producers, food packaging industry and packaging industry in general.
