Travelling to Lappeenranta

When you start to plan your arrival in Finland and Lappeenranta, take into account that you must arrive before the Orientation Days (August 27-30, 2019 or January 2-3, 2020). During orientation week, you will get plenty of useful information, get to know to LUT and Lappeenranta with the help of your tutor, get a LUT user account, visit a library and enrol in the courses.

Most students arrive via Helsinki, the capital of Finland. Below you will find information on how to travel from Helsinki to Lappeenranta and links to the timetables.

Arrival at Helsinki Airport

Helsinki Airport is the biggest airport in Finland, where most international flights land. It is located in the city of Vantaa, about 20 kilometres north of Helsinki and 220 kilometres west of Lappeenranta. If your flight arrives at Helsinki Airport late in the evening/night, you are advised to book a hotel or hostel near the airport and travel to Lappeenranta the next day. All trains and buses arrive at the Lappeenranta Travel Centre ("Matkakeskus" in Finnish).

When estimating your arrival time in Lappeenranta, reserve enough time for baggage claim and transportation from the airport to the railway station.

By train

The quickest way to travel from Helsinki Airport to Lappeenranta is by train – the trip takes 2 hours. Tikkurila railway station in the city of Vantaa is closest to the airport. There are train connections from the airport to Tikkurila railway station; the trip takes about 10 minutes by train. Bus and train timetables.

Train tickets can be purchased online or from the railway station; see the ticket office's opening hours. If you buy a ticket on the train, a service fee is charged.

If you arrive from Russia, the closest station is in Vainikkala where minivan transportation is arranged at the Lappeenranta Travel Centre.

By bus

The bus trip from Helsinki Airport to Lappeenranta takes about 4 hours and involves changing buses once or twice. Tickets can be bought online, at the bus station, or in the bus (some bank cards might not be accepted in the bus).

By car

Take the direction toward Porvoo from Helsinki, then to Kouvola and finally to Lappeenranta. You can also drive via Lahti, but this is a bit longer route. About 8 km before Lappeenranta, go right off of Exit 51 in the direction of Yliopisto (university) and follow the signs leading you to the university campus area. The distance between Helsinki and Lappeenranta is 225 km.

Confirm your arrival in Mobility-Online

Once you have confirmed your travel plans, please complete the arrival information questionnaire in Mobility-Online by July 12 or November 22. You find the questionnaire in your application workflow.

It is crucial that you give this information within the stipulated deadlines to enable us to allocate you a student tutor.

If you are unable to complete the arrival questionnaire because you have not booked a flight or cannot confirm the arrival date, time, and means of transport, you are obliged to send a notification of this by July 12 or November 22 by e-mail to incomingexchange@lut.fi. Students arriving from Russia must inform their arrival time in Finnish time.
