Biography

Dr. Jouni Havukainen is a professor of Environmental Sustainability of energy systems, and the aim of his research is to ensure that sustainability aspects will be taken into consideration during the systemic changes taking place in the energy sector. His research centers on decarbonizing energy production, Power-to-X solutions, renewable fuels, and offshore wind energy.

He has conducted research on three continents during his career. He conducted research on waste management and circular economy at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) on energy recovery potential from biodegradable waste, in Zhejiang University (ZJU) on improving the environmental impacts of municipal solid waste management, and in Technical University of Denmark (DTU) on environmental performance of dewatered sewage sludge digestate management options. Furthermore, at the Energy Biosciences Institute in Berkeley he conducted research on environmental impacts of renewable biofuels production.

He has participated in acquiring funding, managing and conducting research in various research projects. Recently his research has focused on hydrogen and P2X in Hygcel and JustH2Transit projects,  sustainable access to energy in Rwanda and Uganda in Sunny project, renewable fuels production from biomass in Butterly project and holistic sustainability assessment tool development for offshore wind power production in COMPASS project.
