Biography

Jesse Railo is Associate Professor at LUT University. He is a PI in the Flagship of Advanced Mathematics for Sensing, Imaging and Modelling (FAME) of the Research Council of Finland and a Fulbright Fellow. His research is also supported by a Homing Grant of the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation. He holds the Title of Docent (Mathematical Foundations of Inverse Problems) at LUT University.

Railo completed his PhD degree with distinction at the University of Jyväskylä in December 2019. He held postdoctoral positions at the Seminar for Applied Mathematics, ETH Zürich, and the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, University of Cambridge. He was the recipient of the Finnish Inverse Prize of 2020 by the Finnish Inverse Problems Society for his PhD thesis Geodesic tomography problems on Riemannian manifolds. Railo received a competitive research fellowship from the Vilho, Yrjö ja Kalle Väisälä Foundation of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters in 2020 for his postdoctoral work. Railo completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Tampere in 2014 and was a visiting student at the University of Sheffield in 2011 - 2012.

Railo works on theoretical aspects of inverse problems for PDEs and geometry. His research focuses on pure mathematics for imaging methods appearing in medicine, engineering and science. In particular, Railo has worked on Radon transforms, geodesic ray transforms, inverse problems for elliptic and parabolic equations (local and nonlocal, linear and nonlinear), and numerics for applications. Railo's work uses methods from harmonic analysis, analysis of PDEs, and differential geometry.

Railo teaches university courses in mathematics and inverse problems. His current teaching at LUT University is in the area of applied mathematics, e.g. PDEs and optimization for undergraduate students. He has teaching experience from 5 universities, for about 20 courses, in English and Finnish, in Finland and Switzerland, in undergraduate and postgraduate level, in applied and pure mathematics, since 2012. In the past, Railo lectured a four-month course "Nonlocal Inverse Problems" at ETH Zurich in Spring 2021, considering the mathematics of electrical impedance tomography (EIT) and its nonlocal variants appearing in the most recent scientific literature.
